Jacob K. Javits Fellowships Program

Jacob K. Javits Fellowship Program popularly known as Javits Fellowships provides support to students of superior ability who want to pursue study at doctoral and Master of Fine Arts level in the specified fields of arts, humanities and social sciences and are selected on the basis of exhibited accomplishment, financial requirement and extraordinary promise.

Javits Fellowship Board frames the general policies, decides various fields of study in which the fellowships gives and appoints dignified panel of experts for the selection of the candidates for the awards. Office of Postsecondary Education (OPE), The Department of Education administers the fellowships in conformity to the standards and criteria set by the Javits Fellowship Board.
The panel selects eligible students based on criteria set by the board and they are to display and justify their financial want through filling of Free Application for Student .

Javits fellowship receives annually until completion of their degree or up to lesser of 48 months and subjected to funds availability. The fellowship comprises of stipend, which basis on the financial need of the fellow, which in turn decides by the assessment of the Federal Student Assistance Processing System and institutional payment, which the higher education institution accepts for the fellow in lieu of tuition and fees.

Regarding the eligibility criteria, individuals need to be citizens or permanent residents of the US or any of its States. The individuals at the time of application should be entering a doctoral program in the next academic year and still in their first year of doctoral program for which they intend to seek financial assistance. For selected field studies where the final highest degree is masters, those individuals are eligible who will be commencing a Master of Fine Arts program in the next academic year.

Eligible applicants attending a graduate program, which will eventually lead to terminal master’s degree or a doctorate in the specified field at the higher education institution, authorizes by an accrediting agency, which has gained recognition by the Secretary of the US Department of Education.

The applicants who are pursuing their course in the foreign institution are not eligible.Javit fellows are eligible to receive loan, grant and work assistance in accordance to the Section 484 of the Higher Education Act of 1965, as amended and students previously recipient of Javits fellowship are ineligible.
